Tom Murphy has been one of the area’s top real estate agents for more than two decades.  He has settled more than half a billion dollars in real estate in the metropolitan area and has amassed a wall of impressive sales awards. He has ranked first in sales transactions in the Washington area in 10 out of the last 15 years that these statistics were gathered by the Realtors’ Association.

Tom considers himself an “accidental real estate agent.”  He entered the business after a distinguished career in academia and public service, which included service as Deputy Assistant Administrator for Legislation at NASA, Director of the Federal Executive Institute, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services.  In academia, Tom started and directed the Public Administration graduate program at the University of Missouri, as well as the Institute for Urban Studies graduate program at the University of Maryland for five years each.

In 1982, Tom began buying investment properties;, his five children would be buying  houses. His license was for those deals.  Today, Tom has assembled a full-service team of talented agents who are dedicated to working with customers through every phase of the real estate process—from the hunt to the closing.  The Murphy Team has sold more properties in Washington, D.C. and in the Maryland suburbs than any other agent or team. The Team  has four agents with Virginia licenses, five with Maryland licenses and eight with DC licenses.

In addition to leading the Murphy Team, Tom specializes in representing sellers of houses, townhouses, condos, and coops as a listing agent and in representing buyers throughout the metropolitan area.  He has been a certified buyer representative (CBR) since 1994.

Tom is a veteran agent in Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, Dupont, Connecticut Avenue, and in Logan Circle and South West DC. Also from Silver Spring to Bethesda , Rockville, Olney and  Potomac in Maryland.  His particular affinity for Foggy Bottom stretches back to the first condo Tom sold, which was owned by a University of Maryland professor friend.  He sold the condo in two weeks and immediately became enamored with the potential for the neighborhood around George Washington University.  “I had found a new campus,” Tom explained to The Washington Post years later in an article declaring him to be the “Condo King.”  He has been a neighborhood mainstay in townhouses, houses, and apartments ever since.

Tom has also handled the sale and purchase of medical, dental, law, and insurance offices.
